The race for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Cameroon entered day three on Wednesday with five matches played across the continent.
Guinea added more misery to Chad, sending them to the bottom of Group A following a 1-0 victory in a match played at September 28 Stadium in Conakry. Mady Camara scored the all important goal in a win that cements the Syli Nationale’s position at the top of the table with seven points.
In Group G, Kenya were held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Comoros in a match played at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
Youssef M’Changama broke the deadlock with his swerving free kick taking a wicked deflection off the wall from almost 25 yards out after Mmadi Ali was fouled.
However, the EA Guikamp star turned from hero to villain when he was sent off with five minutes remaining in the opening half for a second bookable offence.
Kenya found an equalizer in the 65th minute courtesy of a Masoud Juma volley which he superbly connected from an Eric Johanna pass inside the 18-yard box.
Stars looked stronger after the equalizer but failed to utilize their numerical advantage with Victor Wanyama and Cliff Nyakeya missing several open chances.
The reverse fixture between the two sides will be played on Sunday 15 November at Stade Omnisports de Malouzini in Moroni.
Comoros tops the Group G with five points followed by Kenya who have three points. Egypt (third on two points) and Togo (fourth with zero points) will meet in the group’s other match day three fixture on Saturday 14 November.
In Group E, Burundi secured their first point by holding Mauritania to a 1-1 draw in a match played at Stade Cheikha Ould Boydie in Nouakchott. Difaâ Hassani El Jadidi’s defender Bakary N’diaye scored for the hosts before Saidi Ntibazonkiza levelled the matters late on.
In Group I, Senegal edged closer to Nations Cup qualification after beating Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in a match played at Stade Lat-Dior in Thies. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane opened the scoring from the spot in the 44th minutes while Opa Nguette sealed maximum points for the hosts in the 73rd minute.
The Teranga Lions maintained their top spot in the log with nine points after three games while Guinea-Bissau are placed third with three points from three matches. Second-placed Congo and bottom-of-the-log Eswatini will meet in Brazzaville on Thursday.
Equatorial Guinea secured a 3-2 win over Libya to move to third position in Group J. Miranda Josete opened the scoring for the Nzalang Nationale before Sanad Al Warfali and Mohamed Bettamer netted for the Mediterranean Knights.
Pedro Obiang and Salomon Obama scored for Equatorial Guinea in the injury time in a match that was played at Al-Salaam Stadium in Cairo.
