The Gambia U-20 National team began their technical preparations for the upcoming Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, Egypt 2023, on Monday, December 12, 2022.
The 17th edition of the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, a biennial international youth football competition run by CAF, is slated to take place from February 18 to March 12.
The Gambia will participate in the youth competition for the fourth time in the upcoming edition. Their most recent appearance was in 2021, where they placed third.
According to the Gambia Football Federation, the junior scorpions, two-time WAFU Zone A champions, began their practice with a brief recovery session at the Gambia Football Federation National Technical Training Center in Old Yundum.
The team will continue its training sessions on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings.
The Gambia, led by Coach Abdoulie Bojang, qualified for the continental competition after reaching the final of the WAFU Zone A U20 tournament, which was held in Mauritania from August to September 2022.
The Gambia lost 1-0 to Senegal in the final.
Ten of the 12 slots for the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations have already been booked. The final two spots are for Central Africa, which is finishing up its qualification competition today.
The four teams vying for the two spots are DR Congo, Cameroon, Congo, and the Central African Republic.
