2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Liberia to Know Opponents on Thursday

The Lone Star’s journey for the 2025 AFCON qualification will be known tomorrow when they learn their opponents from the draw.

The draw will be held in Johannesburg on Thursday, July 4, at 12:30 GMT.

The largest football competition on the continent will see 48 African countries compete to see who will qualify for the 35th edition of the competition.

It’s been 22 years since the Lone Star last appeared in the AFCON, where they failed to cross the group stage in Mali.

The Lone Star, under the guidance of coach Mario Maranica, were one of four winners from the preliminary round after eliminating Djibouti.

Coach Mario and his boys remained unbeaten in 2024 and recently made a significant move in the FIFA Rankings when they became the biggest climbers in the June rankings by climbing 10 places.

According to the draw’s format, the engaged teams will be grouped into four pots of 12.Β

The highest ranked nations, as per the latest FIFA Rankings issued on June 20, 2024, will occupy Pot 1, with the same procedure to be followed for Pots 2, 3, and 4 to make up the 48 nations.

The concluded draw of the qualifiers will be made up of 12 groups of 4 teams (Group A to L), where the first and runners-up in the eleven (11) groups that do not involve tournament hosts Morocco, will gain qualification to the competition.

The qualifiers are scheduled to start in September, where the first two matches will be played, followed by two more in October before the final round is played in November.

The competition will be played in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, owing to the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled between June 15 and July 13, 2025, in the United States, when the AFCON was supposed to be held.
