DR Congo Invites Furious Stare From FIFA Despite Release of Football Boss And Suspension of League

Trouble is brewing in the Democratic Republic of Congo which could inevitably invite glaring from FIFA following the arrest and release of football boss Omar Constant.

A FIFA Council member, the 60-year-old’s apprehension and subsequent release could mean DR Congo’s government bracing up for a likely suspension from the World Football governing body.

FIFA is known to have a zero tolerance to interference with the running of football.

Police swooped in on Omari on Tuesday around 9:30 pm, holding along three of Constant’s executives in custody. The move reels on the back of a warrant from a court in Khinsasa requesting his arrest over corruption and embezzlement of funds.

The DR Congo’s football boss’s arrest is in relation to a missing $1M –a sum meant for arranging of matches for the Central African nation’s various national teams which, it is said, has not been seen in the football federation’s coffers.

Omari is yet to be charged in court relating to the aforesaid allegations but it’s believed the process would soon be formalized as police prosecutors continue their probing of the case.

The FIFA council member was let go Wednesday but his vice president Barthélemy Okito and Secretary General for Sports remain in police cell in Matete Parquet.

Constant’s release comes amid pressure from the football fraternity in Khinsasa.
