The Harambee Stars will today find out who gets to lead them for rest of their 2019 Afcon qualifiers with the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) set to name a team coach.
Over six high profile foreign coaches have been “shortlisted” with sources tipping retired Dutch footballer Ruud Krol favorite to land the job.
The Kenya national team has been without a coach since the premature departure of Belgian Paul Put, just three months into job, on personal grounds.
Krol is believed to have already held talks with the federation over the managerial hot-seat that also involved the Cabinet Secretary of Sports but FKF couldn’t confirm the report when reached by Ducor Sports.
The new coach is expected to come with his own backroom staff as promised by FKF’s boss Nick Mwendwa in an earlier interview where he promised journalists that the unveiling of the new coach will be done 1st May.
Former Rwanda coach John McKinstry, French duo Benard Simondi and Phillipe Troussier, Dutchman Ronny Van Geneugden and former Malta national team coach Tom Saintfeit are among names linked with the vacant job.
Krol has been capped 83 times for the Dutch national team and played most of his professional football at Ajax Amsterdam. He helped his country finish as FIFA World Cup runners-up in 1974 and 1978 and a UEFA Euro third place in 1976.
His individual honors include being named in FIFA World Cup All-Star Team (2) in 1974 and 1978,UEFA Euro Team of the Tournament in 1976, FIFA XI in 1979, Ballon d’Or third place in 1979 and Guerin d’Oro (Serie A Footballer of the Year) in 1981.
Krol has won the South African, Tunisian and Egyptian leagues with several clubs and was named the South African PSL coach of the season in 2010-2011.
