Tunisian Clubs Demand Subsidy from Gov’t, Threaten to Boycott League

Clubs in Tunisia are threatening to boycott the new season should the government fail to settle their annual subsidies.

Teams in the various leagues of the North African nation are given each a cash portion to start each football term.

However, they are now considering staging a boycott of the championship following the government’s failure to settle subsidies for the previous term.

Alarmed by the development, the sports ministry has promised to pay the dues – a total amount of which is not disclosed – on a condition clubs make copies of their finances available to the central government including payments to the taxman.

The ministry, in a statement this morning, said efforts are being made to pay the sum, saying it has written to the Football Association four times, beginning in July, to furnish it with teams registered in the nation’s different leagues.

Football boss Wadi Jarii is yet to publicly react to this claim.

Tunisian outfits have had several run-ins last campaign with seven clubs sued to FIFA by former and current players for non-payment of wages.
