Barcelona’s right-back Moussa Wague says Senegalese can’t wait to lay hands on the Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Taranga Lions couldn’t go beyond the quarters in the previous edition staged in Gabon after getting ousted by eventual title holders Cameroon on penalties.
Despite boasting impressive players in their ranks each edition of the African Cup, the West Africans have failed to live up to the billing in previous outings.
They showed some promising signs with their World Cup display and have not tasted defeat over one year, winning a run of six games.
Adding to this feat are their recent victories over strong oppositions Nigeria and Mali in the run up to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Inevitably, the public expectation in the team has immensely risen with most billing them for the gong and Barcelona’s Wague is not unaware of this.
“The CAN is very important for us Senegalese because the people have been waiting for this trophy forever,” he said, admitting there is a bit of a pressure to deliver.
“We are working hard to better approach this competition and represent Senegal. We know that it will not be easy but we will try to get there. I think for us it’s positive pressure. In Africa, there are no small teams. And that, we are aware of it.”
“So we will do everything for a good representation of Senegal. We will try to assume this favourite costume. We are aware that in Africa there are many good teams,” the 20-year-old said.
Signed from AS Eupen, Wague has featured only three times for the La Liga champions.
