Nigeria qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 when Kenneth Omeruo earned them a 1-0 win in a Group B match played at the Alexandria Stadium.
The Super Eagles go through to the next round of the competition as they now have six points from their two games after a 1-0 win over Burundi in their opening match on Saturday.
Nigeria controlled the early possession stakes, but the first real effort on goal went the way of Guinea in the ninth minute when Nabby Keita fired a powerful shot inches wide of the post from the edge of the box.
In the 18th minute, the Super Eagles finally got an attempt on goal, but Ahmed Musa’s 35-yard thunderbolt sailed wide of the goal.
Seven minutes later Ola Aina played Ighalo into some space on the edge of the box, but the latter shot just wide of the target.
In the 32nd minute Guinea came close to finding the back of the net when Francois Kamano met a cross from Moses Simon, but his header skimmed the wrong side of the post.
Nigeria finished the half the stronger of the two sides with Alex Iwobi having the last attempt in the 42nd minute, but his shot from roughly 20-yards out went over the crossbar.
The Super Eagles’ persistence didn’t regress at the start of the second half, with little space offered to Guineans who struggled to get to advancing areas.
Ahmed Musa delivered a ball into the box, which took a slight deflection and travelled towards the back post. Alex Iwobi was unmarked, but could only knee the ball out for a goal-kick, with the Guinea keeper at his mercy after missing the ball in the air.
In the 68th minute Guinea had a great chance, as Sekka picked out Faalete in space. He cushioned his lay-off for Keita, who looked to pass the ball into the back of the net, and he struck the post before Chidozie Awaziem put it behind for a corner.
With 15 minutes remaining the Super Eagles found the crucial goal they had been seeking when Moses Simon’s right-wing corner was headed in at the near post by Kenneth Omeruo.
The closest Syli Nationale came for equalizer found Ernest Seka on the edge of the box and took a shot that sailed over the top.
A beautiful cross out wide from Diawara found Kamano, but the bulky forward failed to connect, missing the chance completely to the dismay of Guinea supporters.
The goal continued to elude a certain Kaba after failing to convert a chance at the far post following a cross in the box.
Disheartening as it seemed to Guinea, the pressure did not lower their mood and Issiaga Sylla came close to finding the net but a goal-line clearance prohibited him.
