Three African countries have terminated their 2019/2020 league season following the coronavirus pandemic that continues to disrupt football activities in many parts of the continent.
Angola and Guinea football leagues bodies announced the cancellation on Thursday, declaring their domestic league null and void.
Mauritius had ended their football season earlier this month without declaring a champion.
All football activities in the three countries were already under suspension since March but now the seasons will not continue anymore.
Mauritius FA secretary-general Paul Didier Gnanapragassa stated the decision after consulting with their members and the country’s relevant authorities.
As a result, Grande Riviere Sud Est Wanderers will secure qualification for the next season’s CAF Champions league, according to reports in Mauritius.
In Guinea, the top-flight league president Mathurin Bangoura confirmed the new development citing that it was impossible to resume the games in time before the oncoming wet season in the West African country.
The decision means that there will be no relegation or promotion of clubs but the top three best-placed teams at the end of the first round will represent Guinea in the CAF Interclub competition.
At the time of the league’s suspension, Horoya AC were top of the table with 29 points collected from 13 games, four clear of second-placed Wakirya AC.
In Angola, the local federation and clubs met and resolved to void the current campaign, with no title awarded and no relegation.
However, the federation announced Primeiro Agosto and Petro Atletico will represent the country next season in the CAF Champions League. The two clubs were on top of the Girabola before the season was suspended.
The African Football Confederation (CAF) set a May 5 deadline for all its 54 members to present their plans to restart or cancel domestic leagues.
Meanwhile, other counties federations are expected to meet this weekend to discuss how their seasons will be concluded.
Major issues to resolve will be to decide whether there will be league winners and whether the federation will apply promotion and relegation to this season’s results.
