Portugal-Based Midfielder Wants To Play For Guinea-Bissau

Miguel Abreu, Portugal-based footballer with Guinea-Bissau roots has made a public overture to Djurtus coach to draft him into the national team squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 26-year-old who turns out for second-tier Portuguese side Arouca says, given a chance, his inclusion in the team will greatly boost the Guinea-Bissau national team.

Abreu was born in Sixal to a Portuguese father and Guinea-Bissau mother and owns a Guinea-Bissau passport and thus eligible for selection by Djurtus coach Baciro Cande.

Speaking in an interview from his Portugal base, the midfielder said that he has always had the option to play for Guinea-Bissau and wishes to explore it now.

“My dream is to play for Guinea-Bissau,” Abreu confessed to Sou Djurtu. “ I am closest to my Guinea-Bissau relatives and it is always been home to me despite the fact that I have not lived there.”

The fact that he has been visiting Guinea-Bissau since the age of eight, could make the midfielder easily adapt to African climate if given a chance to feature for Djurtus.

However, should he be called to the national team, Abreu is not definite of getting a first-team place as he will be contesting for playtime against Guinea-Bissau’s talented midfielders such as Sori Mané, Mamadu Tunkara Pelé, Zezinho Lopes, Jorge Bura Norgueira and João Jaquité.
