Former Cameroon defender Henri Bedimo has announced his retirement from professional football.

Former Cameroon defender Henri Bedimo has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old has been hampered by a persistent knee injury and last played for Marseille in June 2018.

Marseille released him the same year and he is currently running a sports academy for social and educational purposes in Douala, in partnership with his former side, Montpellier, the club where he made his name.

“I am closing my professional football chapter. I can’t leave without thanking coaches, volunteers, staff and not forgetting my dear supporters,” Bedimo said on Facebook.

“I am proud to have defended the colours of my country. It was 15 years of memories. Thanks to all and long live football.”

Bedimo played 406 games for Marseille, Lyon, Lens Montpelier and Le Harve and won 51 Cameroon caps between 2009 and 2016.

He made his senior international debut aged 26 and remains one of the most capped Cameroon defenders, scoring one goal for his country – against DR Congo in June 2015.

A left-back or centre-back, he played for Indomitable Lions in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup in Brazil four years later.
