AFCON 2021 Qualifiers: Uganda Coach Confident Of Qualification Despite Burkina Faso Draw

Uganda national team’s caretaker coach Abdallah Mubiru is confident his side will qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations despite held to a goalless draw by Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

Cranes were the huge favorites for the match thanks to their pedigree and the fact that they were playing at home in Kampala.

But they failed to make their superiority count as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Burkina Faso in their fifth match of Group B of the qualifiers.

Mubiru’s side enjoyed the majority of possession and the clearest chances in Kampala but could not find a way to beat Herve Koffi in the visiting goal.

Speaking after the match, the experienced gaffer said that they can still go ahead and qualify for their third successive appearance in the Africa competition.

“Definitely this is not the resulted we wanted. Our target was to win here and go into the final game in a better position but I’m happy with performance of the players. They put up a good fight and fought until the final whistle,” Mubiru said in the post match interview at St Mary’s Stadium.

“I think we deserved more than a point especially with our performance in the second half but we shall take the point and go back to rectify the mistakes before the game against Malawi. We now know that job must be completed in Malawi.

“Even before this game, we know that no matter the outcome, we had to secure a good result away in Malawi. Therefore, we shall use the time between now and Monday to polish up.”

A good result for Cranes against Malawi on Monday, 29th March 2021 will send them to 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon next year.

The other team in Group B is South Sudan and they will meet Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Sunday in their last group match.
