Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon will be looking to defend her Olympic title when she lines up in the 1500m final this Friday in Tokyo.
Kipyegon will face off with Netherlands’ Salif Hassan and Freweyeni Gebreezibeher of Ethiopia in the four lap race. Competition will also come from Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo, Great Britain’s Laura Muir and Linden Hall of Austria.
Hassan, a 5,000m world bronze medallist and world champion in the 1,500 and 10,000, is bidding for medals in all three events in Tokyo in what would be an Olympic first.
Kipyegon eased to the final after winning Semi-Final One on Wednesday in a time of 3:56.80 while Hassan won the other semi clocking 4:00.23.
Briton Laura Muir who posted 4:00.73 after opting to miss the 800m to pour all her energy into the metric mile, finished behind Hassan.
The other Kenya’s medal hopeful Winny Chebet tripped and fell in the first semi-final before finishing last.
Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo also booked a place in the final when she finished in the fourth position in Semi-Final Two.
Faith Kipyegon will be defending her title having won gold in 2016 Olympics in a hotly contested final that featured Muir, Hassan and Caster Semenya.
