South Africa Sevens produced a breathtaking performance to whitewash Kenya 38-5 and win the Vancouver Sevens on Monday morning.
The Blitzboks were dominant from start to finish as they dismantled Shujaa’s physical approach to go through the tournament unbeaten and grab maximum points in the process.
Winger Angelo Davids two tries in the opening five minutes for the Blitzboks in the first half alongside Sakoyisa Makata and Ronald Brown, as Dewald Human and Ronald Brown managed a conversion each for their half time lead.
Kenya did manage to get one try back via Daniel Taabu, but a late Darren Adonis try – also a first for the centre – sealed the dominant win by the Blitzboks.
It was the first all-African Cup final since 2008 Adelaide, and the only one in the series’ history.
And the win puts South Africa on the lead in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and will be firm favorites ahead of the next tournament, to be played in Edmonton next weekend.
“It was amazing just to be out there playing again especially in front of a great crowd. It was great to have two African teams in the final and it’s always a fierce encounter with Kenya,” said South Africa coach Neil Powell.
“I’m really proud of the boys, there’s a lot of youngsters who are the next generation of Springboks sevens and they’ve done really well.”
The tournament was missing many of its top-ranked teams led by Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalists Fiji, silver medalists New Zealand, Australia and Samoa due to COVID-19 quarantine and travel restrictions.
