Victor Wanyama: Kenya Midfielder Retires From International Football

Kenya and Montreal Impact midfielder Victor Wanyama has retired from international football.

The 30-year-old defensive midfielder is one of the most-capped players in Kenyan history, with 64 appearances.

He has played in one Africa Cup of Nations since his debut 2007, scoring seven international goals during his 14-year career.

His last appearance on Harambee Stars colours was against Comoros on November 15, 2020 in their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Kasarani.

“Growing up it was always my dream to represent my country. With a great deal of pride, I can say that I have been fortunate to live my dream. From making my debut against Nigeria to captaining the team in the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt, the past 14 years have gone beyond what I ever thought possible,” said Wanyama in a statement.

“But all good things must come to an end eventually. After a long consideration I have made the really difficult decision to retire from international football. I hope to return one day to the federation and off the field, but until then I will still be Harambee Stars’ biggest supporter,” he further said.

Wanyama made his Kenya debut in May 2007  in a friendly against Nigeria at the age 15 and moved to Belgium the following year.

He then switched to Scottish side Celtic from Belgian club Germinal Beerschot for an undisclosed fee in July 2011.

He arrived at Tottenham in June 2016, making 47 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites.

In May 2020, Wanyama joined the Major Soccer League outfit Montreal Impact as a Designated Player on a free transfer.
