2022 World Cup Qualifiers

Ethiopia Stunned by South Africa

South Africa consolidated their leadership of their 2022 World Cup qualifying group after they beat  3-1 in Bahir Dar on Saturday.

They have now recorded seven points from three matches, while Ghana are second on three points from two games.

Teboho Mokoena almost opened the scoring in the ninth minute, but his sliding effort from six-yards out was saved by Fasil Gebremichael.

That chance proved to be the only bit of goal-mouth action in the opening 15 minutes, as both never looked like giving anything up, rather than go out and attack.

Ethiopia’s best chance of the half arrived on the 36th minute, as Shemeles Bekele’s header was saved by Ronwen Williams.

Bafana took the lead at the stroke of half time courtesy of Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick that slipped through fingers of Ethiopia goalkeeper.

Ethiopia equalized in shortly after the hour mark courtesy of Getaneh Kebede who sent a powerful free-kick from the edge of the box that looped over the wall and found the top corner.

Five minutes later, Bafana scored an equalizer when Mobbie sent a long throw into the box where Mvala was on hand to complete a simple finish from close-range.

Asrat Tunjo nearly restored parity in the 76th minute when he was slipped through on goal by Yerad Belay, but the striker was superbly denied in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 90th minute when a quick counter-attack from Bafana saw the ball getting to Makgopa who lobbed onrushing Gebremichael to make sure of the three points.
