Djibouti Sack Coach After Poor Qualifying Campaign

Djibouti have parted ways with coach Julien Mette after 2-0 loss to Burkina Faso in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on Monday.

The East Africans are bottom of Group A without a single point from four games in the qualifiers, losing to Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria in the first four games of the qualifiers.

The 39-year-old Frenchman has been in charge of the Djibouti men’s national team since April 2019 and was hoping to lead them 2022 global football showpiece.

Djibouti weaknesses were first exposed against Algeria in their first match of the group stages of 2022 World Cup qualifiers where they soaked in eight goals.

Known as the ‘Shoremen of the Red Sea’, their previous away losses  in international scene included conceding nine goals in the Democratic Republic of Congo and eight in Malawi.

Mette had been in charge of the side for 17 games, winning four, drawing a similar number and losing nine since in his two-year stay.

Before joining Djibouti, Mette worked in Congo Brazaville as the General Manager of AS Otoho, but quit as he wanted a new and bigger challenge.
