Vihiga Queens hardly raised a sweat as they cantered to a 2-0 win over an industrious ASFAR side in CAF Women’s Champions League match played at Al Salaam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday afternoon.
There were loads of enterprise and Endeavour from ASFAR, but it was not enough to crack Queens’ stubborn defence, which has conceded only once goal in inaugural tournament.
Charles Okere’s charges went ahead on the 8th minute courtesy of Violet Wanyonyi when she drifted past goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi and into the ASFAR goals.
In the 19th minute, Phoebe Owiti was unlucky to see her goal-bound shot deflected inside the box after having a lot of space to pick his spot.
ASFAR struggled with their finishing for most of the half and went into the break trailing 1-0 to Vihiga Queens.
The Moroccans saw more of the ball in the first five minutes of the second stanza but could not create clear-cut chances.
Saana Mssoudy nearly got an equalizer goal for ASFAR in the 50th minute with a grass-cutting shot from outside the area that sailed narrowly wide of Lilia Awuor upright.
Queens scored their second four minutes later when Jantrix Shikangwa capitalized on opponents poor defending to send a loop past Er-Rmichi, 2-0.
The game was swinging from end to end after that but neither side could take their opportunities in the final third and Okere made another tactical change in the last 13 minutes as Mercyline Wayodi replaced Wanyonyi.
Tereza Engesha came close to making it 3-0 for the hosts in the last three minutes with a strike from range that was tipped over the bar by Er-Rmichi but Queens were already home and dry, as they claimed a vital win in their fight for a semi-final spot.
