AFCON debutants The Gambia can breathe a sigh of relief after the entire squad was cleared of COVID-19 ahead of their crucial quarterfinals match against hosts Cameroon this Saturday at Stade de Japom in Douala.
Following their 1-0 win against Guinea in the knockout, the Scorpions departed from Bafoussam, a city in western Cameroon for the capital Douala for Saturday’s encounter.
As part of COVID-19 protocols, the entire squad did their pre-match COVID-19 tests at the team’s hotel with all 27 players and staff testing negative, the Gambian Football Federation confirmed.
COVID-19 has been a setback, with other debutants Comoros being the biggest victims after 12 cases of coronavirus were confirmed within their squad, including both keepers.
The unfortunate situation led to the Comoros using an outfield player in goal against hosts Cameroon in their 2-1 loss in the round of 16 clash, a match that Comoros could have possibly won if they had their full squad.
Fortunately for the Gambians, they have all of what it takes to continue their incredible and historic run when they face the hosts this Saturday.
