Zamalek will face Wydad Casablanca on Friday, in matchday four of the 2021/2022 CAF Champions League in Group D.
The Egyptians are third in their group on two points half-way through the mini league, and four points adrift of their opponents of the day who are second on the table.
The group stage has been a nightmare for the White Knights who lost 3-1 to Wydad in Casablanca, with Ahmed Sayed ‘Zizo’ giving Zamalek a third minute lead before Zouhir El Moutraji, Amine Farhane and Yahya Jabrane scored for the home side.
And while Zamalek could have done better by defending their early goal, they remain determined to cause an upset and revive their hopes for a quarterfinal spot.
After the heavy loss White Knights parted ways with French coach Patrice Carteron and has since announced the return of Portuguese head coach Jesualdo Ferreira.
“Wydad won the away leg 3-1. That doesn’t mean we must win by three also, but we want to win this game,” the Portuguese tactician told a news conference in Cairo.
“I have been here for three days. I cannot compare between this generation and the one I had during my previous reign. But I will do exactly what I did before and each player will have tasks to fulfil,” he added.
Wydad, on their side, know that a second successive win over their Cairo-based opponents will effectively seal a quarterfinal berth (which would then be mathematically confirmed if Petro du Luanda beat Sagrada Esperança in the group’s other match in Luanda on Sunday night).
The Moroccans star Hamza Jananallah started in pre-match conference that his team is looking forward to achieving a positive result that would bring it closer to the quarter-finals, despite the strength of the opponent.
The match will kickoff at 16h00GMT at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday 11 March 2022.
