Danny Jordan will officially face two rivals to retain his seat as the president of South Africa Football Association (SAFA) at the national polls on June 25.
The Safa Governance Committee cleared three candidates to vie for the top seat, and more than 60 nominees for various posts at the country’s football governing body.
Outgoing Safa Vice-president Ria Ledwaba and Safa Tshwane president Solly Mohlabeng are the candidates out to oust the sitting football chief through the ballot.
“We received about 65 nominees because in terms of the criteria we received for the president’s position, which is a contested area as we all know, four nominees came through in terms of the preliminary representation,” Governance Committee chairman Mogajane said.
“This was followed by the national list, which is 35 nominees, and lastly the provincial list, which is 26 nominees. So in total it is 65 nominees. We also looked at the women representation, but unfortunately in terms of these result, there are more males, who are 52 while the females are 13.
“On the presidential candidates, the eligible candidates for the SAFA presidency based on the information received as follows: Dr Danny Jordaan, Mr Solly Mohlabeng and Ms Ria Ledwaba. Those are the names of the candidate that eligible to stand.”
Nomsa Mahlangu, the University of Johannesburg’s director of sport, was disqualified from the presidential race as she was nominated by University Sports South Africa and not by a SAFA region.
Jordaan was intially elected as the new president of Safa in September 2013,succeeding Kirsten Nematandani.
In the last elective congress, the veteran football administrator ran unopposed after Ace Ngcobo withdrew at the eleventh hour.
