New York Red Bull have signed Ugandan midfielder Steven Sserwadda on a permanent deal from New York Red Bulls II, the Major League Soccer club announced on Saturday.
The 19-year-old has been grinding his way through New York Red Bull’s set up leading up to his latest achievement.
Sserwadda impressed in the USL championship leading to a loan move to Major Soccer League team, with the club Sporting Director Denis Hamlett certain that the starlet is headed for a bright future.
“Steven is a dynamic young player that we have seen develop during his time with New York Red Bulls II and we are excited to add him to our roster,” said Hamlett.
“In his time with the club, we have seen the promising qualities he possesses, and we are looking forward to having him on the field with us.”
New York Red Bull coach Gerhard Struber explained why they had signed Sserwadda.
“What we’ve seen from Steven over the last couple months has been very exciting,” said coach Struber. “He fits into our style of play, and we have seen that in his appearances over the last month and believe that he can succeed at the MLS level.”
Sserwanda joined the New York Red Bull on a series of short-term loans over the last month.
The youngster started his football journey at a tender age, and in 2018, he was promoted to the Ugandan Premier Leagues KCCA FC’s first team after rising through the ranks of the youth teams.
A few months later he appeared in his first international club appearance in the 2018-19 Caf Confederation Cup in a 2-1 victory against Tanzanian club Mtibwa Sugar. During the 2018 Uganda Cup semi-finals, Sserwadda scored two goals in a 9-0 victory against Synergy FC.
On September 30, 2021, Sserwadda joined USL Championship side New York Red Bulls II and made his debut for them on October 15, 2021, during a 1-1 draw versus the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
