Kenyan Premier League sides Gor Mahia has appointed Jonathan McKinstry as their new head coach for the 2022/23 season.
After being linked with a few coaches, including Dylan Kerr who had been considered for the role, K’Ogalo decided on the former Uganda Cranes coach to lead the team going into the new season.
“ We are pleased to announce Janathan McKinstry as our new head coach,” the club said in statement. “Coach Jonathan McKinstry penned a two-year deal and we welcome him to Gor Mahia.
The Irishman replaces German tactician Andreas Spier who opted not to renew his contract at the end of last season.
As Uganda national team coach, McKinstry boasted two wins in every three games played, recording a 67% win rate from the 18 games in charge– including 12 wins, 3 draws and only 3 defeats.
He is remembered for guiding Uganda to victory in the CECAFA Challenge Cup 2019 where Cranes won all of the games contested, for only the second time in their history.
McKinstry has been a tourist in his coaching career that has seen him have stints at English side Newcastle United, New York Red Bulls, the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana and the Craig Bellamy Foundation in Sierra Leone.
Despite having little experience at a senior level, the Irishman was in 2013 appointed as the interim coach for the Sierra Leon national team.
He was sacked in September 2014 before being appointed the new national team coach for Rwanda in March 2015.
In November 2018, McKinstry joined Bangladesh Premier League side Saif SC replacing Englishman, Stewart Hall.
He tendered his resignation at Saif in September 2019 to take the Uganda Cranes coaching job where he was fired in April last year.
