Walid Regragui Takes Over As Morocco Coach

Former Wydad Casablanca Walid Regragui has been named as the coach to replace Vahid Halilhodzic, who was sacked a fortnight ago.

Halilhodzic was sacked following disagreement between him and the Royal Moroccon Football Federation on how to prepare the Atlas Lions for the 2022 World Cup finals.

Regragui, who lead Wydad Casablanca to the CAF Champions League title last season, has signed a four year contract.

The 46-year-old former Morocco international doesn’t have much international coaching experience.

Royal Morocco Football Federation said they share with the coach a vision of commitment to “achieving good results that will satisfy all Moroccans.”

Regragui began his coaching career as assistant to then national team coach Rachid Taoussi.

He spent five years in charge of FUS Rabat, winning the championship in 2015-16. He took over Qatari club Al Duhail in 2020.

Morocco will face 2018 runners-up Croatia, Belgium and Canada in Group F at the World Cup finals in Qatar.
