Petro de Luanda Extend CAF Champions League Journey

Petro de Luanda booked their ticket for the round of 16 of the CAF Champions League with a 4-0 aggregate win over South African side Cape Town City.

Following their 3-0 away victory in Cape Town in the first leg of their round of 32 encounter, the Angolan giants sealed a 1-0 win in the return leg match at Stadio 11 de Novembro.

A strike from second-half substitute Cabibi hammered the final nail in Cape Town City’s coffin.

Both teams started cautiously and play was restricted largely to central areas not far beyond the halfway line.

The visitors nearly grabbed an early goal after the Petro defence was exposed just 20 minutes into the encounter.

Lekay rounded Petro goalkeeper Hugo Marques, but the striker hit the side-netting and the hosts survived a scare.

Petro were struggling to create chances for their main striker Tiago Azulao, who was hoping to score more goals in the tournament for the club.

The Angolans, who won last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, and Cape Town City were locked at 0-0 at the interval following a tightly contested first half.

Tiago and his team-mate Gilberto tormented the Blue and Gold Army defence after the restart as the hosts looked to break the deadlock.

Keet had to make a good save from Gilberto’s curling cross which was intended for Tiago, who pulled the trigger from range.

Cabibi was introduced by Alexandro Santos as the Os Tricolores searched for a late winner.

However, it was the Blue and Gold Army , who came very close to scoring as Mkihze ‘s thunderous long-range effort beat Marques only for the upright to come to Petro’ rescue.

Both teams launched late attacks in search of the winning goal, and it finally came in the 87th minute courtesy of Cabibi’s strike and Petro emerged 1-0 winners after containing Cape Town City.
