Uruguay ended their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Ghana in a Group H match which was played at the Al Janaoub Stadium in Qatar on Friday.
The win sees the La Celeste finish third on the Group H standings – one point above fourth-placed Black Stars. Both teams are eliminated from the competition.
It was the Black Stars , who threatened first through Inaki Williams just five minutes into the game with the La Celeste.
The Atletico Bilbao attacker unleashed a first-time which sailed just over the crossbar with Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez rooted to the ground.
Ghana had another golden chance on the 21st minute when they were awarded a spot-kick after Mohammed Kudus was brought down by Uruguay goalkeeper.
The Black Stars captain Andre Ayew stepped up to take the penalty but was denied as Rochet dropped down to his left to save.
Ghana were left to rue that missed chance as Uruguay broke the deadlock following a goalkeeping error the 26th minute.
De Arrascaeta headed the ball over the line from close-range after a shot from Luis Suarez and doubled their lead with a superb volley after Suarez was again involved in the buildup six minutes later.
The Black Stars then pushed in hunt for goals and they nearly scored three minutes, before the half-hour mark.
Mohamed Kudus brilliantly dribbled his way into the Uruguay box and he forced Alvarez into a low save as the Black Stars failed in the battle to level matters.
Ghana sustained the pressure at the start of the second half and nearly managed to find the back of the net in the 58th minute when Rahman Baba produced a powerful shot but it sailed over the crossbar.
Sebastian Coates almost extended Uruguay’s lead in the 74th minute but he saw his 24-yard shot sail inches wide of the target.
Ghana tried to find their way back into the game and came close to finding the back of the net in the 85th minute when Osman Bukari met a cross into the box, but he saw his ten-yard header well-saved by the keeper.
The Black Stars threw players forward in search of in the final five minutes but were unable to penetrate the La Celeste defence as the match ended 2-0 in favor of the latter.
