Senegal Exit World Cup After Defeat To England

Senegal saw their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign coming to an end with a 3-0 loss at the hands of England in their Last 16 match at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday night.

The highly anticipated match had an electrifying start as both sides looked for an early goal with both goalkeepers, Eduardo Mendy and Jordan Pickford, making good saves in the opening 10 minutes.

The Senegalese made more entries into England’s penalty area in the opening 20 minutes, but the likes of Kyle Walker and John Stones protected Pickford well as they blocked numerous shots.

England threatened in the 23nd minute as Bukayo Saka went on a surging run before firing at Mendy, who got down well to deny the marksman.

The Three Lions eventually took the lead in the 38th minute as Phil Foden found Jude Bellingham, who crossed for late-arriving Henderson to stroke home the opener.

Bellingham again surged from his own box and fed Foden, who rolled the ball into the path of the Kane to smashed in an unstoppable shot to become England’s eighth scorer in Qatar.

That was good as it got to in the opening stanza, as far as goal-mouth action was concerned.

Senegal threatened five minutes after the restart as Pape Sarr managed to send his shot wide of target after being picked up by Abdou Diallo.

Bukayo Sako extended England lead when he cleverly lifted in the third after 58 minutes following a penetrating run and low cross by Foden.

Nampalys Mendy almost pulled one back for Senegal in the 76th minute but the defender’s glancing header produced a fine save from Pickford.

Mason Mount almost increased his side’s lead in the 85th minute but the midfielder’s effort from the edge of the area flew inches wide of the right-hand post.

Famara Diedhiou could have pulled one back for the Teranga Lions in the 89th minute but the striker’s shot went over the crossbar, after getting on the end of Kalidou Koulibaly’s long ball.

How they lined up:

England: Jordan Pickford – Kyle Walker, John Stones (Eric Dier 76), Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw – Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson (Kalvin Philips 82), Jude Bellingham (Mason Mount 77) – Bukayo Saka (Marcus Rashford 65), Phil Foden (Jack Grealish), Harry Kane.
