Morocco Beat Portugal To Reach Historical Semi-Final

Morocco defeated Portugal 1-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match which was played at Al Thumama Stadium  in Qatar on Saturday.

The wins see the Atlas Lions reach the semi-finals where they will face either England or France in the second last-four clash on Tuesday, while the Navigators are eliminated from the competition.

Morocco, who played with one man down in the closing stages of the match, have also made history by becoming the first African team to reach the last-four at the World Cup.

The highly-anticipated match got off to a lively start with both goalkeepers getting tested in the opening 20 minutes of the game.

Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves tried his luck from the range with a powerful left-footed shot from 25 yards in the 1th minute.

However, the Wolverhampton Wanderers  midfield maestro’s attempt went straight to Morocco goalkeeper Bono, who made a comfortable save.

Morocco pushed forward and six minutes later, they came close to scoring through their experienced defender Achraf Hakimi.

The Paris Saint-Germain right-back  pulled the trigger from long range and his effort was brilliantly parried away by Portugal custodian  Diogo Costa.

The Atlas Lions were awarded a free-kick in a promising area on the half-hour mark and it was cleverly played by the North Africans.

Sofyan Amrabat   played it to Hakim Ziyech , who bend it for Selim Amallah, but the Moroccan forward place his effort wide of the target.

Morocco took control of the game towards the half-time beak, and their efforts were rewarded in the 44nd minute when En-Nesyri rose high above the defence to send a header past Diogo Costa.

The Atlas Lions went into the tunnel leading 1-0.

However, Portugal bounced back with hunger and fought hard but Moroccan goalkeeper Bono was outstanding throughout the second stanza.

Bono saved superbly from Bernardo Silva soon after half-time and the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo for off-form Ruben Neves livened the Portuguese.

Ronaldo made his presence felt with a long-range shot that forced another excellent stop from Bono.

Jawad El Yamiq came to Morocco’s rescue two minutes later, with a great reaction clearance  to deny Vitinha.
