Ducor Sports: African Players Abroad Round-up

In England, Max Gradel and Benik Afobe of Ivory Coast and DR Congo respectively, played a part in helping Bournemouth come from behind to force a 1-1 tie against Manchester United.

At the King Power Stadium, African Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez fired in the second goal as a revived Leicester City sailed over Hull City 3-1.

Ivory Coast’s Wilfred Zaha scored the opener in another EPL Saturday fixture, as a bottom-placed Crystal Palace beat Wes Bromwich Albion.

Sadio Mane of Senegal scored the second goal in Liverpool’s thumping of Arsenal.

Yaya Toure started but was later subbed in Man City’s win over Sunderland however, efforts from Leroy Sane and Kun Aguero ensured that City eased past Lamin Kone’s lower placed side.

A step below the English top tier, Nigeria’s Omastone Aluko and Neeskens Kebano of DR Congo each scored to assure Fulham a 3-1 win over Preston North End.

The Elephants’ veteran Souleymane Bamba, shoved in his second goal of the championship but his first-half gifted goal to Cardiff counted for little after QPR walked away with the spoils to finish 2-1.

At the New York Stadium, compatriot Johnathan Kodjia slammed the final nail in the coffin in Villa’s triumph over Rotherham United, earning the Ivorian forward his 13th goal of the campaign.

Belgium

First half goals from Gambia’s national team captain Omar Colley and Tanzania’s Mbawana Ally Samatta proved decisive for Genk who breezed past leaders Club Brugge.

Congo Brazzaville’s Silvere Ganvoula M’boussy helped his team to a point after sneaking in an equalizer for Westerlo against 10-man Zulte-Waregem.

Mamadou Sylla Diallo from Senegal buried home his 11th goal of the season but AS Eupen still bit the dust to Sint-Truiden.

Germany

Gabon’s Aubameyeng scored twice to take his tally in the ongoing season to 21 goals in Dortmund’s 6-2 victory over Bayern Leverkusen.

Nabil Bentalib saw his Schalke side downed 4-2 by Borussia M’gladbach. The Algerian international had evened the score from the spot-kick but the home side rode away with relative ease in the end.

Italy

Mohamed Salah and Ahmed Ben Ali of Roma and Pescara respectively featured in their team’s Saturday fixtures. There was no African scorer in the Serie A this weekend.

Spain

Algeria’s 25-year-old defender Aissa Mandi fired in the opening goal but in the end, Real Betis would fall short to Real Sociedad.

Elsewhere, at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque – watched by nine thousand four hundred and seventy-two fans – Ghana’s Mubarak Wakaso got booked in relegation-threatened Granada’s 1-0 slip to fellow strugglers, Leganes.

France

Senegal’s Issair Dia is yet to score in six games and got booked in Nancy’s defeat to PSG.

Benin’s Steve Mounie scored again for Montpellier while Algeria’s Yassine Benzia pulled Lille back against Toulouse.

Cheick N’Doye partnered with Cameroon’s Toko Ekambi to plunder a goal each in Angers SCO’s league duel against Caen.

Mali star Cheikh Tidiane Diabate put Metz ahead but a Said 90-minute goal drew the game to a level.

Cameroon’s captain Benjamin Moukandjo managed a goal in Lorient’s 4-1 thumping to Olympique de Marseille.

Netherlands and Austria

Guinea’s Mathias Pogba was the sole African scorer in the Eredivisie and so was Nigeria’s Olarenwaju Ayoba Kayode in Austria’s Bundesliga.

Pogba, 26, let loose in the game’s only goal as Sparta Rotterdam applied the brakes on leaders Feyenoord and the later’s impressive streak.

Turkey

Vincent Aboubakar came in the second-half in leaders, Besiktas’ narrow win over a stuttering Rizespor.

Mali’s Mustapha Yatebare had a blank in front of goal after coming off the bench for losers Karabukspor. Burkina Faso’s Abdul Razak Traore also featured from the start in the same game.

Still, in the Turkish Liga, Africa trio Mohammed Fatau (Ghana), Ben-Hatira (Tunisia) and Nabil Ghilas (Algeria) were left seething after they had a goal disallowed by the referee as Bursaspor clinched all points.

Jonathan Ayite of Togo got on the score sheet to gift Malatyaspor the lead however, a last-gasp goal by Cakmak denied them the spoils.

Portugal

Mateus Galiano de Costa of Angola got a goal but a brace from Rui Fonte and Battaglia reduced Arouca’s equalizing goal to nothing as Sporting Braga grabbed all points.

Yacine Brahimi of the Desert Foxes found the back of the net in Porto’s 7-0 thrashing of second-from-bottom placed Nacional.

In the US, Dominique Badji from Senegal registered his first of the season by providing the winner for Colorado Rapids against New England Revolution in an opener MLS match.
