Tusker Football Club has gone one point up the Kenyan Premier League standings after rivals Gor Mahia bit the dust over the weekend.
Both teams were leveled on points going into Sunday’s game but the Elephants now sit at the table top despite being held to a goalless stalemate by fifth-placed Kariobangi Sharks, at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Tusker FC’s ascension followed second-placed Gor Mahia’s shock defeat to Sofapaka at the Kinerou Stadium, east of the country.
The trajectory means Tusker is on track for a back-to-back title scoop after narrowly beating nemesis Gor Mahia to last season’s championship.
Table-topping Tusker, months back, languished on the wrong end of the standings but thanks to gaffer George Nsimbe, he is being lauded for the dramatic changes which have improved on the club’s most recent form.
Bankrolled by East African Breweries, Tusker is the third most decorated club in Kenya, winning in the Sportpesa sponsored league on eleven occasions and the CEFACA Cup four times.
In the other week’s 14 games, Bandari tied with Western Sima on a goalless draw while Ulinzi Stars also drew SoNy Sugar one-all.
It was, however, a six-goal-thriller between Homeboyz and Zoo Kericho, as both teams fought it out to finish with a 3-3 scoreline.
Earlier on Saturday, Leopards couldn’t go past bottom-placed Mathare United but it was a different case scenario at the Sports Complex, as Chemillil downed Nzoia United 2-1.
Relegation-threatened Thika United slugged out a 2-2 result with Posta Rangers also on Saturday.
