South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk Makes History in the 300m Race

South African runner Wayde van Niekerk, made history when he broke the 300m world best to highlight the Golden Spike, an IAAF World Challenge Meeting, in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Wednesday, 28th June.

The Olympic 400m Champion stormed to 30.81 over the rarely-run 300m distance and in the process took down Michael Johnson’s world best of 30.85 which had stood since 2000, as well as Bolt’s 30.97 meeting record.

He said, [perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“I’m just pleased and grateful for this big achievement. I was a little nervous before the race so had to try to calm the adrenaline. But then I recovered really well.”[/perfectpullquote]

The victory came only eight days after recording a 9.94 personal best in the 100m in addition to becoming the only sprinter to have produced sub-10, sub-20, sub-31 and sub-44 performances at 100m, 200m, 300m, and 400m respectively.
