Abraham Mebratu Named Ethiopia’s New National Team Head Coach

Ethiopia Football Federation appoints former Yemen gaffer Abraham Mebratu as the new national football team’s head coach.

Ethiopia Football Federation has appointed former Yemen gaffer Abraham Mebratu as the new national football team’s head coach.

According to Ethiopian news outlet, Soccer Ethiopia, Abraham Mebratu beat competition from five shortlisted candidates for the position. He was running against ex-Ethiopian international Gebremedhin Haile of Jimma Ababa FC, Hawassa City coach Wabetu Abate and Wolwalo Adigrat University gaffer Kidanemarian Tsegaye among others.

Mebratu was chosen ahead of the four because he’s the only one with experience in leading a national team. He is also popular for his ‘never give up’ attitude and the way his resolve to get results no matter the circumstances.

During his time in charge of the Yemen National team, despite the limited pool of talent, war and insurgence around the country, Mebratu’s team made history by qualifying for the Asian Cup scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates next year.

Despite playing all their home games in Qatar, he inspired a side that hadn’t played a league match since 2014 against well organised Nepal and Philippines to win a spot at the Asian Cup.

He is also acquainted with Ethiopian players, having previously coached Wonji Sugar FC and Gumruk FC, something that will come in handy during his tenure. He takes over from Ashenafi Bekele who resigned in December 2017.
