AFCON 2019 Qualifiers: Liberia to Train in Morocco Ahead of Final Group Match

Liberia’s Youth and Sports Minister D. Zoegar Wilson has revealed that the national team is expected to depart the country for Morocco, where they will conduct their training camp until the match date.

Ahead of Liberia’s final game against DR Congo in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, Liberia’s Youth and Sports Minister D. Zoegar Wilson has revealed that the national team is expected to depart the country for Morocco, where they will conduct their training camp until the match date.

Minister Wilson made the disclosure Tuesday, January 15, when he addressed sports journalists at his office in Paynesville.

According to the former national team goalkeeper, the ministry has been collectively working with the Liberia Football Association on plans to take the team to Ivory Coast, Brazil or Morocco.

“We have been working on plans since our last game against Zimbabwe, and we had plans to either take the team to Bingerville, Ivory Coast, Brazil or Morocco, but we have received information that there are some ongoing renovations in Bingerville, Ivory Coast and the Brazilians now have a new government, so the process has been slow. Hopefully, our team should be leaving for Morocco at the end of this month [January] or the first week in February,” he said.

The Lone Star are one step away from qualification and need to collect all three points in their final game or secure a draw and hope for a favorable result from Harare where group leaders Zimbabwe will be hosting Congo Brazzaville.

When contacted, the Communications Director at the LFA Danesius Marteh confirmed the information and said the local football house is still working with the Morocco Football Federation for the finalization of the team’s training camp.

He said due to the importance of the game and the chances available to Liberia, the FA was doing all it can to better prepare the team in their quest to book a ticket to the 2019 AFCON that will take place in Egypt.

The red, white and blue boys are seated at the second spot of Group G with seven points, one point behind leaders Zimbabwe, while DR Congo and Congo Brazzaville are in the third and fourth positions with six and five points respectively.
