The national football team of Liberia proposed training camp in Morocco ahead of their final game against DR Congo in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers has been canceled, the Minister of Youth and Sports has announced.
The team was expected to depart the country on Thursday, January 24, but according to Minister D. Zeogar Wilson, the team could not go because all of the foreign-based players were not available to make the trip, therefore the government could not send a team comprising only local players for the training camp in Morocco.
Head Coach Thomas Kojo and his team of local players have for the past weeks intensified preparation for the crucial encounter against DR Congo.
“From an economic and a technical point, we didn’t see it advisable to send a team of local players that will not include the majority of those that will play the game in March,” he said.
However, Min. Wilson added that they are still working on plans for the Lone Star to play at least one or two international friendly matches before the team’s departure to Kinshasa.
The Lone Star are seated at the second spot of Group G with seven points, one point behind leaders Zimbabwe, while DR Congo and Congo Brazzaville are in the third and fourth positions with six and five points respectively. A win for them will see them booking their ticket to Egypt for the 2019 AFCON.
