Mamelodi Sundowns’ magnificent unbeaten run finally came to a surprise end at Loftus Versfeld on Friday as they went down 2-0 to CR Belouizdad in final Group B match.
The 28-game streak in all competitions for the already qualified Brazilians places them in some elite company with other great sides of the past.
Masandawana custodian Ricardo Goss gifted Amir Sayoud with a low pass just a minute from the half-hour mark with the striker rounding off the shot-stopper to profit.
Ahmed Gasmi added the second goal for the visitors before added time after Gasmi connected with a cross from the right-side to head into the near corner.
The result means Belouizdad have made it to the last eight after registering nine points on the board in a group where five-time holders TP Mazembe failed to make it to the last eight.
Belouizdad nearly broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when Ahmed Gasmi was gifted the ball in the box, but the midfielder blazed his effort over the crossbar.
The home side eventually took the lead in the 29th minute, as Sayoud pounced on another Sundowns goalkeeper error to slot from close range.
Sundowns almost hit back in the 33rd minute when Chouaib Keddad clearance fell to Peter Shalulile, who ballooned his shot over the crossbar.
Khuliso Mudau went close for Sundowsn three minutes later when he forced Toufik Moussaoui into good save with a strike from distance.
Belouizdad doubled their advantage in the 45th minute, as Gasmi showed great composure to lob Goss, 2-0.
Sundowns looked the much better side at the start of the second half and almost found the back of the net just on the hour mark when a right-wing cross from Mudau was headed just wide by Shalulile.
The only other real chance of the half came ten minutes before time when Morena met a cross from Modiba, but he headed over the Belouzidad goal.
Sundowns finished on top of the Group B table with 13 points with Belouizdad joining them in the last eight of the competition.
