African Champions League: Zamalek Register First Group Stage Win

Egyptian Premier League giants, Zamalek beat MC Alger  of Algeria 2-0 on Saturday evening in what was the White Knights’ first win of the group stages.

Youssef Ibrahim gave the Cairo giants an early lead on the seventh minute before Mahmoud Shikabala extended their advantage at half-an hour mark.

This was the first win for Zamalek who lost 1-0 at home to Esperance of Tunisia after being whacked 3-1 by the same opponent in match-day three in Tunis.

Zamalek are currently third on Group D standings with five points and their only hope on making it to the quarterfinals is by beating Senegal’s Teungueth at home in their final game and hope Esperance defeat MC Alger.

Elsewhere, Teungueth ended their bad run of results after beating Esperance de Tunis 2-1 in the other Group D clash played at Stade Lat Dior in Thies.

The Blood and Gold took the lead in the 28th minute when Mohamed Ben Romdhane found the back of the net.

Serigne Niang restored parity before half time while Baye Diop scored the winner that took them off bottom spot.

Esperance will next be in action in Group D on Saturday, 10 April when they take on MC Alger while Teungueth will face Zamalek on the same day.

In Luanda, Guinea international Sekou Camara scored a second-minute goal to hand Horoya AC a slender win over Petro Atletico in a match played at the Estadio 11 de Novembro.

The result sees Horoya in second spot and on eight points in Group C, with a game to spare as a spot for the knockout stages heats up.
