Al Ahly: Egyptian Giants Appoint Marcel Koller As New Coach

Marcel Koller has been named as the new coach of Egyptian giants and record-African champions Al Ahly.

The 61-year-old Koller, who played 55 times for the Swiss national team in the 1980s and ’90s, replaces Ricardo Soares who was sacked last month following Al Ahly’s disastrous performance at the Egyptian Premier League.

Al Ahly said Koller who had been without club after leaving Swiss club Basel in 2020, has signed a two-year contract.

“We are delighted to announce that Marcel Koller will be our new manager for the next two years,” the club said when confirming the Swiss gaffer.

Koller started his coaching career in Switzerland as its national team assistant coach before taking charge of a number of Swiss top-flight clubs including FC Will,St Gallen, and Grasshopper.

He then moved to Germany where he took the FC Koln managerial role before switching to Vfl Bochum and Bundesliga with them.

Koller then took the role of Switzerland national team but under his leadership they failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

His last job was at home with FC Basel where he lasted for two years as manager with minimal success.
