Simba sealed a top spot in Group A of African Champions League following a 1-0 win over defending champions Al Ahly on Tuesday afternoon.
Al Ahly should have opened the scoring in the 15th minute but Walter Bwalya’s header from the edge of the area sailed inches wide, after Simba goalkeeper, Aishi Manula, failed to collect the in-coming cross.
After a barren spell in the game, Simba nearly broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, as Hassan Dilunga’s effort from close range sailed just over the crossbar.
Junior Ajayi had Al Ahly’s second effort at goal in the 28th minute, as he rifled an effort into the side-netting from 25-yards out.
Walter Bwalya should have broken the deadlock three minutes later, the forward got on the end of Fathi’s knockdown but ended up blasting over from close range.
However, Simba took the lead on the 32nd minute, as some good work from Clatous Chama down the left ended up with Luis Miquissone sending a volley past El-Shenawy.
The visitors tried to level matters in the closing minutes of the first half but were met with a resilient Simba defence led by none other than Manula.
The second half proved to be poor from both sides, most notably Al Ahly, who needed to find themselves an equaliser.
Pitso Mosimane brought on the likes of Mahmoud Waheed and Akram Tawfiq with the hope of bagging an all important equalizer.
However, the Al Ahly failed to get the equalizer in the closing stages and now drop to third place following AS Vita’s 3-1 win over Al Merreikh away in Khartoum.
