Al Ahly To Learn Their African Champions League Group Stage Opponents On Friday

The Red Devils easily qualified after 5-0 aggregate win over Niger’s outfit Sonidep. After a 1-0 away in the first leg the Pitso Mosimane’s charges extended their aggregate win courtesy of Taher Mohamed, Walid Soliman, Ali Maaloul and Badr Benoun.

Nine teams that have lifted the premier African club football title at least once including Al Ahly’s rivals  Zamalek are among the teams that went through.

Zamalek had been given a bye into the group stage as their Chadian opponents Gazelle were disqualified from the tournament after failing to honour the first leg match.

Senegalese outfit Teungueth made the biggest headline with a 3-1 victory against Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca, a result that went into history as the biggest surprise in the history of the competition.

South African duo of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs are also through.

Five-time champions TP Mazembe from DR Congo cruised to a 4-2 aggregate win over Gabonese side AS Bouenguidi.

And they have company in eternal rivals and 1973 winners, AS Vita, who also made it three in a row at the last 16.

Sudan have two representatives in rivals of Al Hilal and Al Merreikh same as  Algeria that has MC Alger and CR Belouizdad.

Simba SC of Tanzania, Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Horoya AC(Guinea), Petro Atletico (Angola) complete the list of last 16 that was also shaped by Covid-19.
