Equatorial Guinean football heavyweights Futuro Kings have appointed Cameroonian Alexadre Belinga as their new head coach.
The former assistant to 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winning coach Hugo Broos has been handed a two-year contract.
Belinga succeeds Leger Romain Chouamo, who passed on last year after succumbing to an undisclosed ailment.
“Futuro is a special club that you fall in love with as soon as you enter it. I want to work hard in order to achieve the fans’ goals,” the former Sables of Bieta boss said at a Malabo news conference confirming his appointment.
“We have a fantastic squad. The best Ghanaian players‚ the best Cameroonian players‚ in addition to the Equatorial Guinea ones. The club has all the success factors.”
Belinga rose to prominence when leading local side Impot de Yaounde to two cup trophies and to two league runner-up places between 2001 and 2006.
He has been caretaker coach of Cameroon once before under one time German-born Coach Folker Finke.
After the departure of Volker Finke, Belinga and his colleague Bonaventure Djonkep were assigned the task of seeing Cameroon through at the 2015/2016 World Cup Qualifiers.
Born on 25 August 1962, Belinga played with Tonnere Kalara Club of Yaounde in the 1980s.
In 1981, Alexandre was called to camp with the Intermediate Lions and during his stay with the team, he participated in three different World Cups in this category.
Upon completion from the National Institute of Sports, INJS, Belinga coached many Cameroonian top teams including Sable of Betia, Fovu of Bahama, Unisport of the Upper Ukam and Astres of Douala.
