Algeria Football Federation (FAF) has agreed to a two-year contract extension with coach Djamel Belmadi, keeping him on the job until December 2022.
The decision by the North African country’s football governing body to extend the deal is to give Belmadi the legitimate mandate to lead the Desert Foxes to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
FAF president Kheireddine Zetchi told reporters on Tuesday that Belmadi’s contract extension was important following his achievements in a short time.
“When Belmadi arrived as the coach of the Greens, he had made no conditions,” said Zetchi.
“The national team was going through a difficult period and it is to his credit to have placed the recovery of the technical situation before any other consideration.
“With what he managed to do in record time and in the most beautiful way, it is logical that after the continental coronation in Egypt, we have reviewed his contract.”
Belmadi led Algeria to the Fennec Foxes to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2019, one year after replacing Rahab Madjer who failed to guide the side to 2018 Fifa World Cup staged in Qatar.
A former Algerian international who managed 20 caps between 2000 and 2004, Belmadi continues with task of helping Algeria defend their title in next year’s their Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON
Algeria currently sit on top of Group H of the AFCON qualifiers with six points from two games and are on course to qualify for the tournament.
