An Algerian Premier League club boss has reportedly resigned amid mounting pressure.
Cherif Mellal head of JS Kabylie –Algeria’s league vice-champions – was subjected to a smattering of boos by a good section of the Algerian fans who turned up to watch his Kabylie side’s CAF Champions League fixture against Sudan’s Al-Merreikh.
Fans inexplicably turned their antics on the controversial football head who later had to leave the pitch before the end of the match.
And shortly after the end of the duel as Kabylie slalomed past the visiting Sudanese, news filtered out that Mellal had resigned as social media went gaga over it.
A fervent fan of press statements, surprisingly there was no dispatch from the club or its supremo repudiating the claims as mainstream Algerian outlets featured the story.
Mellal is credited for revamping JS Kabylie from contended mid-table occupants over the years to title-chasers. However, his term has also been marred by controversy leading to comparisons that he is Algeria’s version of Mansour Mortada, a fire-brand and president of Egyptian club Sporting Zamalek.
He incurred the wrath of the Algerian FA over comments he made appearing to suggest eventual title winners USM Alger fixed their way to the domestic title on final league matchday.
