Angola proved to be more mentally fit as they came from behind to win the match by 2-1 over Central Africa Republic on Wednesday in their Group E Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Despite Central African Republic having taken the lead in the first half it was Angola who walked out victorious as they used their chances and scored two goals in the second stanza.
Angola started the clash the brighter of the two sides, as Ary Papel’s flick sailed just wide of the upright from close range after two minutes.
However, it was Central Africa Republic who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Samuel Nlend, who tapped home from close range.
Angola looked to hit back on the 39th minute when Gelson Dala played Yano through, however the striker pulled his effort wide of the target.
Pedro Gonçalves’ men nearly drew themselves level in the 43rd minute, however Helder Costa squandered a glorious chance from close range.
Angola certainly made their intentions clear after the break, as Costa had a goal flagged for offside, before the Leeds United winger had another effort cleared off the line.
The Palancas Negras were awarded a penalty on the 53rd minute after Central African Republic goalkeeper Kolimba fouled Frendy in the area. The striker rose up only to send his shot wide.
Angola managed to reduce the deficit in the 72nd minute as M’Bala Nzola managed to sneak an effort past Yangao from a tight angle.
The Southern Africans continued to create openings in search of the equalizer and they were awarded on the 76th minute Gelson Dala sent a powerful header from a corner.
Hugo Marques came to Angola’s rescue in the 85th minute, as the goalkeeper was on hand to deny Ceasar Manzoki from scoring an equalizer.
However, Angola held on to claim the three points at the 11 November Stadium in Luanda and they now stand top of the group following the result in their first qualifying game.
