Outgoing Guinean Football Federation boss Antonio Souare has stepped down from the national presidential elections set for May 14.
Souare who was elected in April 2017, announced on Monday that he has decided to withdraw from his candidacy following a meeting with Guinea’s Head of State, Alpa Conde.
“In this decisive time in the history of our football, I have decided, on this Monday, April 26, 2021, to withdraw my candidacy for President of the Guinean Football Federation set to be held on May 14,2021,” reads part of his statement as translated from French.
“This decision may not be welcomed by all, but in the interests of bringing our football together and at a time when the duty of unity and exemplarity rests with us, it remains the best option for us all.
“I have devoted all my time, energy and personal resources to developing football in my country and the continent, I do not want to be associated in any way with the blocking of our the sport.
“In order to safeguard the best interests of Guinea Football, I have therefore decided to make this withdrawal which should be understood as a willingness to redirect my actions to other sectors of Development of Football and Sport in general.
“Thank you to all the players who have nominated me, members of the Executive Committee, sportsmen, supporters and all the sports public for the constant support, seamless loyalty and the achievements achieved together over the last 4 years.
“I wish all the best for Guinean Football.”
In the May 14 elections, the delegates will elect new president, vice president and National Executive Committee members.
