Arsenal is in advanced talks to sign Nigerian striker Henry Onyekuru, according to Sky Sports. The 19-year-old forward currently plays for KAS Eupen and is the top scorer in the Belgium domestic league, scoring his 20th goal on May 20 and finished the 2016/17 season as joint-top scorer with 22 goals, building interest from Everton, Southampton, and West Bromwich Albion as well.
The forward’s representatives previously revealed to Sky Sports News HQ of their client’s interest to play in England with talks understood to have recently progressed with two undisclosed clubs.
It was reported in April that Everton were lead favorites to swoop the Nigerian that the club sent scouts over the North Sea to try and secure a move as a potential long-term fill in for Yannick Bolasie.
It now appears the Gunners may be front runners in acquiring the services of the Nigerian forward – who is also a big Arsenal fan – with sources close to the player expressing their confidence in a move to the English Premier League next season.
Onyekuru’s contract has a release clause of £6.8m and has turned down any swaying offers from other Belgian top dogs, Brugge and Anderlecht. Possibly, the Nigerian would have moved during the winter transfer window to Celtic in January if it wasn’t for Eupen turning down all offers.
Now with growing interest from the Premier League, Celtic’s hopes of signing the on-form striker are likely to hit a snag.
In 2015, Onyekuru debuted for Eupen at the age of 17 and has since helped the club achieve impressive results including a promotion to the Belgian top flight in his debut season.
