Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko are set to release striker William Opoku Mensah, Ducor Sports can report.
Mensah joined the Porcupine Warriors at the start of last season from American lower-tier side Spoke Park Rangers. He struggled in his first months with the club as he netted two goals in eight appearances in the truncated 2019-20 season.
Both parties have now reached an agreement not to renew the contract, which will run down in the next 29 days, with the striker being linked with a move to Asia.
Sources have revealed that the fate of the striker was sealed by head coach Maxwell Konadu, who gave the green light for the player to leave at the end of his contract.
Mensah joined Kotoko in January on a one-year deal with an option to extend the following season. However, the club has preferred to retain Kwame Opoku, Osman Ibrahim, Evans Adomako and Naby Keita as the main attackers.
Many of football fans fondly remember Mensah on the local scene for netting a hat-trick against Kotoko’s fierce rivals Hearts of Oak in Anyinase in the 2017 Ghana Premier League.
The former Karela United captain bagged seven goals in 14 appearances for the Aiyinase-based side in 2018 before making a move to United States of America.
Mensah has already represented the Black Stars B in five games, scoring twice for the side with some of the matches being African Nations Championship qualifiers.
