Township Rollers, reigning champions of Botswana Premiere League is one step away from winning its third consecutive league title with one match left to be played. The final match day in the BTC Premiership is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23.
The Rollers on last Thursday edged closer to retaining the title with a 3-1 win over Miscellaneous, but is closely marked by second-placed Jwaneng Galaxy, with two points separating the two sides.
Galaxy, hoping to clinch its maiden league trophy, kept its title hopes alive following a 4-2 win against Security Systems also on Thursday.
After eight months of attractive football, Wednesday’s final encounters of the top two sides that will be played simultaneously will decide the winner of this season.
Rollers is seated top of the BTC Premiership standings with 63 points and will face 9th placed Extension Gunners in its final match, while second-placed (61pts) Galaxy will go against 10th placed Mochudi Centre Chiefs.
If Rollers retain its title, this will record its league trophy collection to 15 since the league was inaugurated in 1966.
The Botswana Premier League, currently known as the BTC Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is the highest level football league in Botswana. Organized by the Botswana Football Association, the league was initially called the MLO Cup.
Due to its rank in the CAF rankings, only one CAF Champions League spot is awarded to the league champions, while the cup winners gain a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup.
