Senegalese wrestlers could by next season resort to using boxing gloves in reforms introduced by the sport governing body.
This follows growing concerns over the safety of the arena stars after a wrestler fainted upon getting punched in a recent A-list battle.
The combat featured then king of arena Eumeu Sene who fell face down unconscious upon being punched bare-knuckles by his challenger and eventual crown holder Modou Lo.
The two had closed down the gap on fight day after nearly three months of preparations for the fight worth thousands of dollars.
Eumeu went for his challenger after three minutes of hand-swinging before attacking. But Lo stopped him in his tracks, landing two successive blows on Eumeu’s face who collapsed instantly.
Medics were forced to rush to the dethroned arena king’s aid amid fears for his life. He was revived minutes later as he kept asking what had happened, stupefied by the game’s outcome.
This is the second time a wrestler is fainting with another incident in December 2018 during a second-tier duel in which Zoss blacked out on the spot and retired soon after.
The recent incident that occurred in July has forced the CNG –the sport’s governing body – into reviewing the laws of the game in the hope to assure the safety of participants.
In the wake of these incidents, the CNG is slated to introduce the use of gloves for the first time, an insider told SunuLamb, a journal specialized on reporting on the traditional sport in Dakar.
