Trouble is brewing in Algeria’s football after newly crowned domestic Premier League champions USM Alger were accused of match-fixing, Ducor Sports can reveal.
Alger, who won their eighth title last weekend, are purported to have staged their 3-1 victory at home to last season holders CS Constantine on a final league game day.
USM are being accused by eventual league runners-up JS Kabylie whom they beat to the title by just a solitary point.
Controversial JSK chairman Cherif Mellal claims to have found “incontrovertible” proofs suggesting USM indeed fixed the previous game.
It’s a heated affair in the North African capital and matters could head to the courts after Mellal said he has hired attorneys and has, in his possession, “incontrovertible” footage which he is intent on sending as evidence backing up his claims.
In a show of confidence that he has a case, Cherif is ardent on making public telephone conversations he had with CS Constantine’s chairman Tarek Arama in which the latter is said to have solicited for money in the lead up the CS-USM Alger tie.
Kabylie are umbraged over the circumstances surrounding The Smurfs’ comprehensive 3-1 loss at home, at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui –a difficult venue for all teams.
The record 14-time title winners believe Constantine deliberately fielded a weak team and asked players to gift Alger the game as being alleged prior to the start of the game.
Allegation of match-fixing is not new to the domestic game in the North African region but Algeria has come up lately as a hotspot.
A recent investigation in the Algerian league reveals specific monetary charges are lodged to referees to get certain players cautioned with prices bigger with spot-kicks.
The Algerian Football Federation and League Organising Committee are yet to react to the story.
