Modou Lo was left heartbroken Sunday night after failing to get his 1-1 calling on arch-rival Balla Gaye II.
In a fight which had the Senegalese president Macky Sall as grand patron, Modou was subjected to his third career defeat, his first in the last five years.
The Parcelles-Assainaisse-based star’s first loss was inflicted on him by Balla eight years –the duo’s first meeting – before Balla’s Sunday confirmation of supremacy over his rival (2-0).
Modou had been tagged as the favorite in the run-up to the duel given he has been in fine form and has consequently gotten an enviable physique.
However, his physique couldn’t rescue him from the grips of Balla Gaye who established dominance from start to finish, shortening a combat initially tipped to exhaust the allocated 30 minutes.
The erstwhile King of Arena let fly a long jab but missed Modou on the first occasion before sending him theatrically falling in the sand but reacted quickly to get back to his feet.
Destabilized, Lo retaliated with a pack of punches but none landing on his adversary. Then Balla closed ranks as a tussle followed. The 33-year-old Guediawaye cornered Modou prior to unleashing 31 punches, most of them body shots.
As matters enveloped, Balla kept up the momentum then blocked Lo from getting any access to the flanks. He first pinned down Modou then knelt down and rose up again prior to holding Lo from the waist and lifting him by the legs before rooting him upside down in the sands. Up next for Modou is a possible fight with Eumeu Sene.
